The "Two-Finger" Rule

How to Tell if Your Baby is Ready to Size Up?

KEIANN BABY DIAPER

One of the most common mysteries for new parents is figuring out exactly when to move from a Size 1 to a Size 2 (and beyond!). While weight charts on the box are a great starting point, every baby is built differently. Some have chunky thighs; others have tiny waists.

So, how do you know when it’s time to size up? It’s all in the "Two-Finger" Rule.

What is the Two-Finger Rule?

The simplest way to check for a perfect fit is to use your fingers as a measuring tape. Once your baby is diapered and the tabs are fastened:

  1. Check the Waist: Slide two fingers into the waistband. They should fit snugly but comfortably. If you can only fit one finger, or if the skin looks "pinched," the diaper is too tight.

  2. Check the Leg Cuffs: Run your finger around the leg elastic. If it feels like it’s digging into those cute thigh rolls, or if you see red marks when you take the diaper off, your baby needs more room.

3 Signs Your Baby has Outgrown Their Current Size

Aside from the Two-Finger Rule, keep an eye out for these "Red Flags":

1. The "Blowout" Frequency

If you’ve noticed more leaks or "up-the-back" blowouts lately, it’s usually not the diaper’s fault—it’s the capacity. A larger diaper has a larger absorbent core to handle more volume.

2. The "Bikini" Fit

The diaper should sit just below the belly button. If it’s starting to look like a "low-rise" fit or doesn't cover the backside completely, it’s definitely time to go up a size.

3. The Tabs are at the Hips

When you fasten the diaper, the tabs should reach toward the center of the waistband. If the tabs are sitting way out on the hips or are difficult to close, you’ve reached the limit of that size.

Why Sizing Up is a Win-Win

Parents often hesitate to size up because they have diapers left in the current pack. However, moving up a size actually helps you:

  • Prevent Laundry: Fewer leaks mean fewer outfit changes.

  • Better Sleep: A larger diaper holds more wetness, keeping your baby dry for longer stretches at night.

  • Maximum Comfort: KeiAnn diapers are designed to move with your baby. A proper fit ensures they can crawl, wiggle, and play without restriction.

The KeiAnn Tip: If your baby is right on the edge of the weight limit listed on our packaging, we always recommend sizing up. A slightly larger diaper is always better than one that is too small!
